Shepway District Council report that more than 100 commercial vehicles were stopped in a joint operation between themselves and Kent Police as part of a crackdown on illegal dumping on the Romney Marsh.

Ten Fixed Penalty Notices of £300 were issued by Shepway's Environment Community Officers for carrying waste without a licence. Police also dealt a series of offences including immigration offences and failure to produce vehicle documents.

The two-day operation on Thursday 28 February and Friday 29 February followed an increase in illegal dumping of asbestos in several roads and lanes running across the marsh.

Local people are being asked to be extra vigilant and to try and get the registration number and description of the vehicle and a description of anyone they think might be involved.

Residents can report concerns and information to the council's customer services team on 01303 858660.
