A proposal for a huge lorry park to alleviate the chaotic scenes on the M20 when industrial action or bad weather forces lorries to queue on the carriageway,  has been greeted with widespread dismay and opposition by residents in Aldington and surrounding villages.

Kent County Council had put forward a proposal for the off-motorway lorry park extending to some 50 hectares between junction 10 and 11 of the M20 and at the end of Church Lane , Aldington.

The public meetings will allow residents affected to air their concerns and to seek advice on what they can do to put pressure on Kent County Council and others to stop this proposal progressing further.

Saxon Shore Ward Cllr Peter Wood, who represents residents in the villages most affected: “Feelings against this lorry park are running high and residents are asking me ‘what can we do?’ Some residents have already begun writing to Kent County Council expressing their concern and dismay. We hope to encourage more and more residents to air their concerns.”

Michael Howard MP is to chair a public meeting for residents in Sellindge on Saturday 29 March at 4.00pm. A second public meeting in Aldington will follow immediately at 6.00pm. A third public meeting for the residents of Mersham will be held on 12 April at 6.00pm at Mersham Mountbatten Hall.

Stack lorry park in Elham

Dear Ed,

I don't blame these people for challenging this thing. Surely the Dover Harbour board ought to contribute some land for this; I mean it owns quite a lot of land in the Dover area and it is part author of the "stack" atrocity.

Otherwise, why not pick somewhere such as Elham; I suggest Elham since they appear to have missed out on all the house building and it's only fair to share the concrete misery around a little. The only other place I could think of is the land between Aldington and the Lympne Animal Park! Thie way the fellow who once suggested that the Channel Tunnel would have no "environmental impact" could see directly one of the consequences.

Provocatively yours,

Lazarus
