Multi-million pound road scheme to start next year

Work on a multi-million pound scheme to ease congestion for vehicles leaving the Port of Dover’s Ferry Terminal and local traffic heading for the A2 Jubilee Way is set to begin in April next year.

The contract for the Dover Eastern Docks exit improvement scheme was awarded to Edmund Nuttall Limited last week.

It  will involve the construction of a slip road at ground level from within the port directly onto the A20 significantly reducing traffic on the roundabout where the A20 and A2 meet outside the dock.

Construction works are due to start in April and completion is planned for March 2009. The total project cost is nearly £4 million. “This is a significant piece of infrastructure in terms of increasing port capacity by speeding up the flows of exiting traffic, with a spin-off benefit to local road users,” said Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive, Port of Dover.

The roundabout is a bottleneck in the port’s operations when ferry discharges coincide with peaks of local traffic. Non-port traffic heading along the A20 for Jubilee Way will benefit greatly from the scheme because the dock slip road will bypass the roundabout, whilst the existing dedicated A2 slip lane from the Docks will be maintained.

To minimise disruption to the travelling public elements of the construction works affecting the A20 carriageway are co-ordinated with the A20 Resurfacing Works.
