Plans have been unveiled to create a new lorry park near to the M20 motorway which, it is hoped will minimise disruption when there are problems with Channel crossings.

Kent County Council (KCC) has said the site at Aldington, between Ashford and Folkestone, will have capacity for up to 3,000 heavy goods vehicles at a time.

In building it the council hopes to cut down on the disruption caused whenever there is a backlog of lorries on the M20, demonstrated in the past two weeks, where a strike by French ferry company SeaFrance has led to Kent Police's Operation Stack being implemented for a record number of days.
