Events group risk backlash over fun day 'Battle' stance

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

Winston Churchill once said "A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject."

It is reported in last weeks Folkestone Herald that the Hawkinge Community Events Group (HCEG) "will not consider changing the name of the (Battle of Britain) Fun Day …………. It is simply a theme for the whole community to appreciate".

HCEG needs to understand that it is not for them to decide what the Hawkinge Community will or will not appreciate.

It is clear that some in the Hawkinge community do not appreciate linking The Battle of Britain with a Fun Day and are genuinely upset.

Any organisation that does not listen to its users should not be surprised when it no longer has any.

Battle of Britain Fun Day

Dear Editor,

It's amazing how the above title makes the reader wonder what the writer must have in mind. Just including the two phrases, "Battle of Britain" and Fun Day" in the same sentence somehow conveys a total lack of respect for those who suffered in those times - my parents certainly suffered. In fact, the two phrases are almost mutually exclusive.

I have raised my voice in complaint, but was told that I, ".....was missing the point.....". However, I think it is the organizers who are missing the point of those complaining; they are missing the point totally. I also find that I am in agreement with BobM on this and it is not up to the HCEG to decide what I will and will not enjoy.

As ever yours,

Lazarus

Hawkinge Fun Day

I think both BobM and Lazarus have completely missed the point, what those brave men and women gave their lives for, was our freedom and the ability to live the way we do. Holding a Fun Day with a theme recognising the 40th anniversary of the making of the film is in no way disrespectful, At least it will remind people of the sacrifices that were made. I don't see BobM and Lazarus offering a suitable alternative.
