You can join the fight against the scammers

Neighbourhood Watch

It is Scams Awareness Month 2008 and Neighbourhood Watch report that Kent Trading Standards, Community Wardens and Kent Libraries are working with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) on their 'Scamnesty' campaign.

They are asking householders to collect any scam mailings they have recently received in their junk mail, and put them into the 'Scamnesty' bags. The bags will be at all libraries across the county until 27th February.

Kent residents are asked to 'drop in' and 'drop the scammers in it'. If you cannot get to a library, scam mailings can also be sent to Trading Standards Advice, Freepost SEA13607 PO Box 71, Ashford, Kent, TN24 8WB or handed to your Community Warden.

To find your nearest Community Warden, call 01622 696036.

Scam mailings collected from the 'Scamnesty' bags could provide crucial intelligence to Trading Standards Services and the OFT.

The information gathered will be used to target future investigations, and prevent others from being scammed.

The Office of Fair Trading have been successful in obtaining court injunctions against rogue traders operating by mail, including a bogus racing tipster and prize draw promoters based in the UK and in Europe.

Every year an estimated three million people fall victim to mass marketed scams such as bogus lotteries, deceptive prize draws and sweepstakes, fake psychics, get-rich-quick schemes and miracle health cures. Many of these scams are sent through the post, as well as by email or over the phone, and target the elderly and vulnerable. However, OFT research suggests that less than 5% of victims report the scam to the authorities.

It is estimated that these scams cost the UK an estimated £3.5 billion a year.

How interesting that at last Trading Standards are bringing in this new scheme targeting scammers hopefully this will include Herballife , which promises untold wealth the easy way and the earn extra money from home.

It hides away under a series of different names , but all bring you back to the hard sell constant phone calls an badgering by email till you sign up as a 'distributor' the 'products' they sell are given an almost 'miracle' classification but are merely vastly over-priced dieting products you can obtain at a far cheaper rate from most health shops and supermarkets and even Argos.

Folks have lost thousands of pounds and even their homes through this deceitful scam, hopefully trading standards can push to have them total outlawed , though 'pyramid 'selling is illegal, these con artists hide away under the guise of network selling, or multi-level-marketing, even using false government statistics to back-up their claims, they rarely advertise in the press , and were recently exposed by the Sun as fraudsters, which is probably why they hide away on the 'Net' they face law-suits in the USA to the tune of millions, one can only hope this is nipped in the bud before it gains a foothold nationally.
