Clamping down on boozing youngsters

A crackdown on the growing problem of underage drinking has been launched today (5 February).

The campaign to raise awareness of the health issues and the community safety impact of underage drinking brings together Dover District Council, South Kent Police and the Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust.

It will target young people and show the potentially long-term adverse effects the abuse of alcohol can have whilst also raising awareness with parents and carers who should be aware of where their children are and what they are doing. It also aims to target and prosecute those who breach the law by supplying alcohol to those who are underage.

According to national research, 10% of 12-15 year-old drinkers say they buy their own alcohol. 63% of 16-17 year-olds have bought their own alcohol in pubs, nightclubs and bars. A survey of underage binge drinkers aged between 14-17 asked teenagers what problems their binge drinking had let to; answers included unsafe sex, injury, drug taking, involvement in dangerous driving and problems with the Police.

Cllr Mrs Julie Rook, DDC Cabinet Member for Citizenship, said: “Some of the national statistics surrounding young people and alcohol are truly staggering. I think it is important for us to try and raise awareness amongst young people and parents of the impact alcohol has not only on their own lives and long term health, but also the impact it has on the community as a whole.”

Sgt Guy Thompson, from the Dover District Community Safety Unit, said: “There is a strong link between underage drinking and anti-social behaviour, including criminal damage to people’s property. This causes concern to local residents and I am pleased we are joining forces with our partners to tackle the problem.”

Underage drinking at clubs and bars

In talking to teenagers it comes out that groups of friends of 16/17 regularly meet at different bars and clubs around Folkestone and end up under the weather.

It seems to me that, rather than wait until trouble has started on the streets, Police were to check in clubs and bars throughout the town for underage drinkers.

I am sure that many places do make an effort to check on the age of customers but there are a significant number that appear not to.
