Inconvenience at village convenience

Work started this week (Monday 18 February) to update Elham’s public toilets.

The work, which costs £25,000, includes gutting the toilets, renewing all inside walls and bringing the conveniences up to date and to meet Disability Discrimination Act legislation.

Cllr William Richardson, Shepway’s Cabinet Member for Technical Services, said although it would not be possible to create separate toilets for disabled people because of a lack of space, both the new men’s and ladies’ toilets would be adapted for disabled people.

“Once this work is complete it will mean that all our toilets, where possible, will meet DDA requirements. We have a few that simply cannot be adapted and these will have signs saying where the nearest disabled toilet is.”

The work is expected to be completed by 25 March. The toilets will be closed while the work is carried out.
