Free travel in England for Shepway's over 60s

New bus passes will give Shepway's over 60s the chance to travel anywhere in England for free.

National Bus Concessions have been extended and offer free off-peak travel on buses anywhere in England. It will replace the existing council scheme which only offered travel across Kent.

The national scheme is being run locally by Shepway District Council and anyone who is aged 60 or over or who is ‘eligible disabled’ can apply.

Cllr Pamela Carr, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said the new scheme would open up great journeys for pass holders.

“They will be able to travel anywhere in England and hopping on a local bus here in Shepway could lead to some great journeys.”

The passes can be used for any journey during the off peak hours of 9.30am and 11.00pm, and anytime at weekends and Bank Holidays.

Jayne Whittington, Shepway Council’s Customer Services Manager said there was a 30 minute difference between the start time of the existing scheme and new one being introduced in April.

“All local authorities in the Kent and Medway have decided to adjust the journey start time to 9.30am so there is consistency with the national scheme and less confusion for pass holders.

“The bus network across Shepway is very good and it is therefore expected that the 30-minute change will have very little impact. We believe most pass holders will adjust their travel times to after 9.30am.

“To retain a start time of 9am would be very complex and confusing, and Shepway would have to fund travel starting before 9.30am - even if the pass holder is not a Shepway resident. In view of this, the decision has been taken, as with all other authorities across Kent and Medway, to adopt the statutory travel times of 9.30am - 11pm Monday to Friday, and anytime at weekends and Bank Holidays.”

Existing pass holders should automatically get there new card by 1 April. Anyone who does not currently have a pass but who is eligible should contact the council’s Customer Services Team on 01303 858660 or visit www.shepway.gov.uk
