Bogus caller targets churchgoers

Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch are warning residents of a bogus caller who is targeting churchgoers.

The caller is described as a white male approximately 5'10" tall of broad build with short sandy/light coloured hair with a Scottish accent and wearing jeans that have been described as fading and scruffy. He is described as charming, well spoken and totally plausible and is visiting addresses of churchgoers

He says that he has spoken with the vicar/minister and that they have given the name and address of the householder. He tells the householder that the vicar/minister is busy at the moment and that he knows that the householder will help him.

He then gives a sob story about hardship, that his family live in Scotland (or away on holiday) or that he needs petrol money. It seems that he never directly asks for money but sums of money have been given to him.

He has so far visited addresses in Sandwich, Lyminge and Dymchurch.

Should he call at your address please can I remind you to always open the door with the chain in place and to never let anyone inside your house who you do not know. The Police would also appreciate it if you would ring them on 01303 850055 as soon as possible.

UPDATE.... a man has been arrested in Hythe on Sunday (10 February)
