New dual-purpose recycling bins are being installed by Shepway District Council.

The first two of 16 have already been installed in Folkestone Town Centre - one outside Debenhams and the other outside Waterstones.

Each recycling bin is made up of two compartments - one for general waste, and the other for cans and bottles. Some of these bins are to be used for paper on one side and cans and bottles on the other. The idea is to encourage the general public to recycle whilst they are out and about, not just in the home.

Recycling and keeping the district clean is very important to the council, and Cllr Alan North, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, has been keen to play his part in upholding this commitment.

"The council cannot criticise the public for keeping the streets untidy if there is nowhere for them to dispose of their rubbish. These recycling bins are to be placed in strategic positions, for example, in heavily populated picnic sites and along Shepway's coastal areas. Folkestone town centre will also benefit from these bins since there has been an increase in the number of fast food outlets in the area."
