The Eco Schools campaign originated in Denmark in the early 1990s. The idea of making school children environmentally aware was later taken over and developed by the Danish Friluftsradet and the campaign spread to other European countries.

There is now an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.
