Neighbourhood policing teams across the  district are helping school pupils keep their valuables safe by offering free security marking.

Officers have arranged to attend seven secondary and primary schools in Shepway next week to mark things like mobile phones, MP3 players and other valuables.

They will also give UV lamps and pens to school so that pupils can continue to get their property marked.

The property marking initiative has been set up by neighbourhood Sergeant Jazz Bloomfield - pictured right - who wants to raise awareness of keeping valuables safe.

Sgt Bloomfield said: "Security marking is where we write the owner's postcode and house number using a UV pen which can only be seen using a UV lamp."

"I'm hoping the children will go home and encourage their family members to also have their valuables marked to increase their chances of getting it back if it is lost or stolen."

Sgt Bloomfield has also arranged for all police patrol cars to be equipped with UV lights so they can check items when they search someone to identify potential stolen property.
