A British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan,  reports the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The Gurkha soldier based in Folkestone was shot and killed by Taliban fighters in the Helmand Province on Tuesday.

He has been named as Yubraj Rai, a member of the 2 Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles and had been stationed at Shorncliffe Barracks for two-and-a-half years.

The 28-year-old was sent to Afghanistan two months ago.

 His family have been informed.
