Digging for victory at Hawkinge museum

Volunteers at the Kent Battle of Britain Museum in Hawkinge, which closed for the 2008 season at the end of September, have been busy on the winter maintenance programme, and new and improved exhibits for 2009.

One of the exiting new projects for next year is a ‘1940 Dig For Victory Garden’ showing the visitors the way of life on the Home Front during the Battle of Britain.

The emphasis will be on teaching the younger generations visiting the Museum and it is hoped local schools will become directly involved in the project.

Approaches have been made to several local supermarkets for donations of seeds for the garden.

The Museum is also very keen to find an Anderson Shelter to be used within the display and is appealing to readers for help in finding one in a reasonable condition.

Although the Museum is closed for the winter the shop is still open on Fridays and Saturdays 10.00am to 3.00pm and sells a wide range of books, DVDs, CDs, die-cast models, prints, jewellery and toys.

Editor's note: If anyone knows where there is an Anderson Shelter, could they please contact the Museum on 01303 893140.
