More than 300 workers walked out of Dover port yesterday (18 November) in a row over the transfer of their jobs to another company.

But the port remained open as other staff had been brought in by the management to take over during the scheduled 48 hour stoppage.

Dover Harbour Board said staff had been trained to keep the port fully open for as long as they were needed.

Pickets were on duty at the Eastern Docks entrance and at the Harbour Board Offices.

Port of Dover chief executive Bob Goldfield said: "We have 250 other staff trained in various aspects of port operation.

"They are fully trained to keep the port open."
