A man has been remanded in custody charged with attempting to smuggle heroin with a street value of about £2m into the UK.

UK Border Agency officers in Dover found the Class A drug in 43 taped packages inside a Land Rover Freelander after it arrived on a ferry at the eastern docks from Dunkirk on Sunday evening.

The driver from Stockport, Cheshire pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempting to smuggle drugs into the UK when he appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court.

He is due to appear again at the Folkestone court on November 6.
