A rare visitor has caused much excitement around West Hythe's Royal Military Canal.

A Green Heron

The green heron which is normally found in North and Central America was spotted on Saturday and twitchers from across the country have been flocking to get a close-up view of the colourful bird.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said the heron was probably blown over while it migrated along the east coast of North America.

RSPB spokesman Grahame Madge said: "It definitely is the green heron species from North America. It's quite a bit smaller than our grey heron.

"It's not the first time its been spotted in the UK but it is the first time it's been seen in Kent."
