More than 80 Police officers were involved in an operation which saw five men being arrested after a year long investigation into the theft of high value farming machinery.

Kent Police's Serious and Organised Crime Unit carried out a total of eight search warrants across mid Kent, Weald and the west of Kent on Tuesday (21 October).

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Tom Richards said: 'Whilst the theft of farming machinery is rare in Kent, the theft of the equipment is understandably a considerable loss to the owner, both financially and to the continuity of their business.

It is vital that members of the public are aware this type of crime goes on and the affect it has on our local farming community. We ask that everyone remains vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police immediately.'

DI Richards continued: 'A considerable number of these stolen vehicles are transported abroad and sold on. Some sources have previously estimated that the theft of these vehicles across the country can be worth around £3 million a year.'
