Should we have community litter picks?

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

I was very interested to read Susan Carey's upbeat letter praising the KCC Warden for arranging the latest litter pick in the village.

I don't intend pouring cold water on the Warden's efforts and also congratulate her on a fine job of mustering the few.

I just think we should start to question why it is necessary.

Is there so little pride in the village that people cannot be bothered to use one of the many litter bins dotted around?

Or why is it all householders don't bother to clear up any rubbish outside their own homes and shopkeepers fail to keep their frontages clean?

I walked along Canterbury Road on Saturday morning, the day of the clean up, to find much of the areas in front of the shops littered with discarded drinks bottles and cartons, fish and chips and sweet wrappers, bags and cigarette packets.

There was a considerable amount of rubbish dropped around the Hawkinge Partnership Office and together with the new raised planting areas they both appear to have become highly efficient litter magnets.

If we all ensured our street or shop front was kept tidy these litter picks should be totally unnecessary.

Let's all show some pride and make Hawkinge a pristine village of which we can be proud.

J Cullen

In support of J Cullen, I would also echo his views and add

that it is not mere lack of pride, but some form of inverse snobbery that makes (some) people not only to ignore what has dropped to the ground outside their property, but also compels them to scatter their unwanted wrappers and waste. Any attempt at raising the odd question about any of this type of behavior usually invites the litter bug to respond with a string of Anglo Saxon.

Grumpy as ever,

Lazarus
