A cross channel ferry running from Dover has scooped the top award for Best Ferry Company in a national newspaper survey.

With figures for the year to February showing a 3 per cent rise in passenger numbers from the UK to the continent, the biggest rise in a decade, NorfolkLine, which sails from Dover to Dunkerque beat last year's winner, also sailing from Dover, Speed Ferries.

And after a surge of interest in international rail travel during the past 12 months, Eurostar, with its swish new terminal at St Pancras, took the award for Best Train company.

The Observer, Guardian and guardian.co.uk Travel Awards is the longest running survey of its kind, and this year, the event's 22nd, 17,000 readers took part.

The winners received their awards at a gala dinner in Fez, Morocco, last weekend, presided over by Mariella Frostrup.
