Police step up a gear in Dover and Folkestone car crime battle

Kent Police in the South Kent area are stepping up a gear in the fight against local car crime.

The number of thefts from motor vehicles in South Kent has fallen dramatically since 2000, and in fact in 2007/08 we achieved a 24% reduction in thefts from vehicles.

However, during September 2008 there has been a 30% increase compared to August with car crime being concentrated in the following areas: Willesborough and the Stour ward in Ashford, Buckland in Dover and Harbour and Harvey Central in Folkestone.

Motorists are being urged to take the following simple steps to reduce the risks of becoming a victim of car crime: Remove all valuables from your vehicle and never leave anything on display. Even an old coat or a plastic bag can tempt a thief.

If you have a Sat Nav, remove the cradle and wipe away suction pad marks. Lock all doors and windows, not forgetting the sunroof, when leaving your car. Use car parks that are part of the police-approved Safer Parking Scheme.

Approved car parks display the official 'Park Mark' sign. Report anyone acting suspiciously near vehicles and tell the police if you are suspicious about anyone selling second hand Sat Navs or car stereos in pubs.

Police are carrying out directed patrols in the above areas and neighbourhood officers and PCSOs will be distributing advice and information to motorists.

Officers have also be targeting criminals believed to be involved in car crime and have made two arrests in the past week. A 28-year-old man was arrested following a warrant at an address in Dover in which stolen goods were found. He has been released on bail whilst officers make further enquiries.

A separate 28-year-old man from Dover was also arrested and charged with 10 motor vehicle-related offences and is due to appear before the court in the near future.

Detective Inspector Kenny Ingram said: "South Kent remains safe for car owners with the chances of becoming a victim of crime low. "However, we really do need the public's help to keep the area safe by following the crime reduction advice we have issued.

"You wouldn't leave large amounts of cash on your dash board, so please don't leave expensive items, most of which are easy to remove." He added.
