The large container ship grounded in the English channel yesterday morning was successfully re-floated at high tide in the evening, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said.

The German-registered LT Cortesia travelling at a reported 24knots became stuck on the Varne-bank, a large underwater sand bank about nine miles south of Dover,  en route from Thamesport to the Suez Canal.

It was re-floated at high tide by three tugs, the MCA said, and moved to a safe anchorage 10 miles east of Dover, where it is undergoing inspections.

The Secretary Of States Representative for Salvage, Hugh Shaw said: 'We are very pleased that the salvage operation has resulted in such a large vessel being quickly re-floated and removed from a potentially very hazardous situation.'
