Sumatran Tigers go Dutch on Dover to Calais crossing

Passengers making the short Dover to Calais crossing were unaware they were sharing their voyage with three wild animals.
The extremely rare and endangered trio of Sumatran Tiger cubs, born at Chessington Zoo, were transported by passenger ferry to their new home at Burger's Zoo in Holland.

The crossing was a smooth one despite the cubs being named Hujan, Bayu and Deru, which mean storm, thunder and rain in Indonesian.

The tigers were transported, un-sedated, on the Dover to Calais passenger ferry accompanied by their new keepers. They have been successfully taught to enter their cage without the need for tranquilisation so they can undergo Chessington Zoo's regular routine health checks.

Marc Boardman, Zoo Manager at Chessington World of Adventures and Zoo said: "This is a wonderful time for us all here, to breed three Sumatran Tigers is a great achievement for the team as there are only an estimated 500 left in the wild. The tigers will contribute hugely to a new blood line in Europe to help sustain the breeding programme."
