Rowdiness in village hall at WI meeting

Hawkinge Acrise and Paddlesworth WI

What fun we had at our first meeting of 2008. It was wonderful to hear the laughter, shrieking and general rowdiness in the hall.

And what caused this departure from our usual decorum you may well ask; it was the Beetle Drive and the marvellously funny play put on by the Drama Group that did it!

The afternoon did start seriously but once business was out of the way; which included handing birthday cards and singing to the “January Babes” (see the December write up) the fun began.

Of course when you only undertake a Beetle Drive once a year some confusion reigns to begin with – should I go clockwise or anti-clockwise? – but eventually we settled down to serious dice throwing and scoring – such huge fun – I think I will suggest we do it more often! Once the twelve games were completed it was time for a well earned cup of tea and to partake of the refreshments each member had brought along to share (well perhaps not quite all of them!) and catch up with asking how everyone had fared over the festive season. Then it was time for the play.

The Drama Group had come up trumps again with a very funny adaptation written by Ann Wilson. The players were children rehearsing the nativity play for their school. I am sure you can imagine how it went, I really feared for the baby Jesus who was being swung about unmercifully by “Mary”- hadn’t she ever seen a baby being cradled?

Each player excelled – thank you so much for performing again for those of us who missed out the first time it was aired – I think even those who had seen it before really enjoyed it the second time around.

There was a really big entry for the monthly competition as well – obviously everyone would like to take the new green and gold overall winners cup home in November – it was for an item starting with the letter J and Linda Barnes was the winner with a jug bought in Bavaria.

Next month being February it is for a Valentine card – old or new, hand crafted or bought, sentimental or not. Surely you all have something that can be entered – please try.

Our next meeting takes place on Tuesday 5th February when we have Joan Finney giving a talk “Life of the Young Wife of a Royal Marine Bandsman”.

We start at 2pm in the Hawkinge Village Hall and would welcome new members. Should you wish any more information please contact our president on 01303 891420 or secretary on 01303 863146.

Linda Barnes

Committee member
