The former Southlands School in New Romney began its reincarnation as the 'Microsoft Academy' this week.

Sponsored by the computer software giant Microsoft, Tonbridge School and Kent County Council, the academy aims to give the 1,100 students a fresh start.

As well as a new school uniform, created in Microsoft colours, the curriculum too has been overhauled to improve standards.

Principal Tracy Luke, her staff, and students have all had a say in the decision-making for the changes which have been made.

A second Shepway academy in Folkestone, near to the former Channel School will be opening its doors on Tuesday 11 September.
