Dover coastguard believe a canoeist found dead off the Channel coast may have been run down by a ship.

The man's body was found off the Romney Marsh coast early today (8 September), and a damaged canoe was later found floating between Folkestone and Dungeness.

Dover coastguard said the man's injuries and the damage to the canoe suggested he had been run down.

The crew of a fishing vessel spotted the body in the water, south of Rye, at about 6.30am.

Coastguards were alerted and a lifeboat was sent to bring the body back to Rye lifeboat station, where the man was pronounced dead.

Police are appealing for information that could help identify the man thought to be in his 30s.

The Dover coastguard spokesman said that they had received a report of a missing person but efforts were still continuing to formally identify the man.
