Harry Hall, owner of Jolsons public house and party bar, has been given a pat on the back by Shepway Council’s Environmental Community Officers for not only providing five butt bins outside his business in Tontine Street but for sweeping the pavements before and after closing time.

“I sweep the pavements before we open and again after we close so I know that if there are any butts on the streets they’re not from my patrons. It’s just a matter of being responsible and having a bit of pride in the town.”

He says he has had no problem with the smoking ban.

“Everyone has accepted it. Only one person tried to light up the day the ban came into force but this was purely a mistake. As soon as he realized what he had done he apologised and put his cigarettes away. Everyone goes outside if they want to light up and that’s why there are so many butt bins. I want to make is easy for them to get rid of their butts properly and not throw them into the street.

Kathy Harvey, the council’s Smoke Free Officer and Karyl Rimmer Environmental Community Officer Supervisor visited Harry to thank his for his efforts in helping to keep Shepway clean and to present him with some free cigarette butt pouches for his customers.

Cllr Rory Love, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “By providing sufficient bins and by sweeping the pavement outside Jolsons, Harry Hall is providing an example for others to follow. His responsible and commendable approach deserves the community's praise."
