Dear Editor,

I am most thankful to friends in Hawkinge and Folkestone for their encouragement this summer.

They have followed my recent record breaking channel swim in August and other swims over the years, even during my years of unsuccessful attempts.

It reveals the great sportsmanship of the folks of the area.

What most impressed me is the fact that the people of Hawkinge and Folkestone have been encouraging and understanding of my efforts. My swim on August 7 was really part of my total experience each year and I was happy that I succeeded at age 56.

Be assured that I will be back in 2008 for another, although I cannot be certain that I will succeed. I do however plan to keep swimming the channel and enjoying the fine company of you folks.

I am already missing the countryside of Hawkinge and the beaches and sea at Folkestone
