Hundreds of jobs to go at Pfizer

Around 420 jobs are set to be lost in East Kent after drugs giant Pfizer announced it was ceasing the manufacturing side of the business at its Sandwich site.

The company said it was the result of ongoing consolidation of its global manufacturing operations.

In a fiercely competitive marketplace the company has also cut jobs in sales, and research and development (R&D), since 2005.

The 420 redundancies will be phased in over the next two years.

Sandwich is its European R&D headquarters and employs 3,400 people.

Thanet South MP Stephen Ladyman called the latest losses "dreadful news".
