Figures published of the May district election results for Shepway indicate that the Conservatives won nearly 75% of the seats by polling just 50% of the votes.

The Lib Dems who polled 25% of the vote gained 22% of the seats, but the minor parties won just two seats on Shepway District Council from their 25% share of the vote.

People First party who polled just 6% had two councillors elected, but the new Shepway Independents who finished third in the number of votes polled failed to win a single seat with their 8.5% share of the vote.

The figures were published yesterday on the Shepway Lib Dem website.

Of the 62,432 valid votes cast, the totals for each party were as follows:

Conservative 31,435 (50.35%)

Lib Dem 15,870 (25.43%)

Shepway Independents 5,321 (8.52%)

Independents 3,838 (6.15%)

People First 3,770 (6.04%)

Labour 1,245 (1.99%)

UKIP 688 (1.10%)

BNP 265 (0.42%)

(Note: A number of wards had more than 1 councillor to be elected, in multi-member wards each elector had more than one vote to cast. The totals shown are the total valid votes for each Party in the May 2007 elections)
