Warning to horse owners following pony attack

Kent Police has asked horse owners to be vigilant and to implement crime prevention measures, following an attack on a pony in Preston, near Wingham, last week.

The horse was in a field with two other animals when she was cut with a sharp object.

It is hoped the horse will recover from the physical affects within a few weeks.

Kent Police is offering horse owners the following advice:

  • Stable horses overnight where possible

  • Ensure locks to stables, gates and fences are good quality and in full working order

  • Challenge people who are unknown to you and who are in the area where your horse is kept - only do this if you are with others and it is safe to do so

  • Microchip or freeze-mark your horse to ensure it is easily identifiable, and make sure you have a good description of it, with photos

  • If you can, vary the times you visit your horse so your daily routine, and more importantly, specific times when the horse will be alone, are not obvious to onlookers

  • Join the Horsewatch group in your area – visit www.ukhorsewatch.org.uk

  • Report anything suspicious and any incidents involving horses to the police

  • Rural and Environmental Crime Co-ordinator Acting Sergeant Andy Small said: 'Incidents in which horses are deliberately hurt are very rare but we are urging people to implement simple security measures as a precaution. We would also like people to report anything suspicious to police at the earliest opportunity.'
