Following letters expressing concerns about the Hawkinge Activities and Adventure Centre Limited, Shepway Shepway District Council has issued the following statement

Hawkinge Activities and Adventure Centre Limited

The Council has received letters expressing concerns about Hawkinge Activities and Adventure Centre Limited. This Company is a registered charity and as such its activities are governed by the Charity Commissioners and Charity law. The details of its charitable objects and any restrictions upon its activities will be set out in a charity scheme and a trust deed.

The Company is not in any way connected with the Council and the Council, accordingly, has no control over its activities.

It is the Charity Commissioners to whom any queries concerning a charitable body’s activities should be addressed.

In 1987 the Council sold three parcels of land to the Company. That is a matter of public record and the transfer is registered at the Land Registry, as is the usual practice. The transfer provides that if restrictive covenants in the Council’s favour are released, then monies are to be awarded to the Council by way of compensation.

On 20 June 2007 Cabinet resolved to approve the release of the covenants for £467, 500 and also to secure the demolition of the former Officers’ Mess that is on part of the property, either through terms associated with the release of covenants or by enforcement action.

These resolutions are now being progressed.
