Top Gear Channel crossing stunt - 'totally irresponsible'

Coastguards have slammed an attempt by Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to drive across the Channel in three specially-adapted cars for the BBC TV show according to the kentnews.co.uk website.

They reported that the attempted crossing across the world’s busiest shipping lane last week, remarkably saw one of the vehicles actually reach the French coast.

But they say, coastguards at Dover have branded the exploits as ‘irresponsible’ and were left fuming claiming the TV crew failed to check in regularly as requested.

Clarkson successfully made the crossing in a white Nissan 4x4 truck with a 225-horsepower outboard motor but May, in a Triumph Herald with a sail capsized, and Hammond in a VW camper van sank.

A coastguard is quoted as saying he thought the stunt was "totally irresponsible."
