George, a Patterdale Terrier loves digging but he dug himself into trouble when he decided to explore the rocks at St Mary’s Bay.

The tenacious terrier became stuck under the rocks last week and after the efforts of his owner, Jo Braddon, failed to find him, she called the RSPCA but then spotted two of Shepway Council’s Environmental Community Officers who were replacing dog beach signs nearby.

Karryl Rimmer and Giles Barnard went to help with the rescue mission. Giles borrowed a spade while Karryl contacted the coastguards to ask for advice.

“I dug one hole but we could not hear him or see him. We started another one and heard him whimpering,” said Giles. “Jo did most of the work with her bare hands. Eventually I managed to get hold of one paw, his head followed and then we managed to free him completely.”

Giles and Karryl received a thank-you card from Jo, who lives at Dymchurch Road, St Mary’s Bay, and a photograph of Max.

“We were delighted to be able to help Jo rescue George, who is a great little dog. But we should perhaps also warn owners to keep their pets away from the rocks – especially if they have George’s terrier instincts which came sometimes lead them into trouble,” said Karryl.
