No invite to link road opening angers councillors

Parish councillors at their monthly meeting were angry they had not been invited to the opening ceremony of the Hawkinge link road claimed Cllr John Heasman.

He said that only the Chairman and Vice Chairman, Cllr David Callahan and Cllr Jean James were invited. "The whole of the Parish Council attended the opening of the first phase of Spitfire Way," Cllr Heasman said.

"The Churchill School was invited to the opening and received a donation towards a poly tunnel by the builders,  but Hawkinge Primary School received nothing and were left out of the opening ceremony," Cllr Heasman added.

The new road which was expected to be completed in February 2007 has been criticised for dividing the community after road signs to East and West Hawkinge were erected.

They were described by Cllr Tony Hutt as divisive and PC Trevor Moody too, is worried that the village could split in two. The Hawkinge Gazette has written to Kent County Councillor Susan Carey and also tabled a question to the Parish Council to ask if they can put pressure on Kent County Council to have the signs changed to something less confrontational.

"I am disappointed that Hawkinge School was left out of the opening ceremony," said Cllr Hutt, "even the opening of the road was divisive."

"I am however happy that The Churchill School was given £1000 towards the poly tunnel." continued Cllr Hutt.

Cllr Peter Smith said: "I am surprised that a major builder is not treating the local schools equally when we are trying to unite the village."

Councillors agreed to send a letter to Wimpey Homes to register their views.
