In a close contest for the job as Chairman of Hawkinge Parish Council at Wednesday's meeting (9May), last year's Chairman, Cllr David Callahan was voted in for another year.

In the voting for the two prospective Chairmen, Cllr Callahan nominated by Cllr George Hodgson and Cllr Peter Smith nominated by Cllr Tony Hutt, was four to three in favour of Cllr Callahan and he was duly elected to serve another term of office.

Vice Chairman will be Cllr Jean James who was unable to attend the meeting. She was also up against Cllr Smith, with both polling three votes. The Chairman used his casting vote in favour of Cllr James and scuppered Cllr Smith's bid for the number two job.
