Nail biting time for prospective Parish Council chairmen.....

Moves behind the scenes indicate a closely fought battle in this year's Hawkinge Parish Council Chairman contest.

The Gazette has been tipped off that the probable protagonists will reach a stalemate unless a third contender steps into the fray.

But the two faction council, famously known for its internal squabbles now has the opportunity, with two new members who were not party to this squabbling, to end the feuding and join forces to meet the huge challenges facing the village.

Names bandied about for the top job include the incumbent chairman David Callahan and supporter of the village youth, Peter Smith.

Lack of experience may be a drawback for another possible runner young Keven Avery, nicknamed by some as the 'the 'boy'. Not surprising, when you calculate the average age of the former council, but his enthusiasm and interest in sport could see Keven as a strong contender.

The battle begins in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday (9 May). Don't miss it!
