Cheriton Councillor Peter Gane has been elected as the new Mayor of Folkestone and the Deputy Mayor will be Harbour ward councillor Emily Sanger.

The Liberal Democrats did well to take control of Folkestone Town Council at the elections on 3rd May in view of the landslide Tory victory on the District Council.

They won 11 of the 18 seats and saw a number of new faces elected to the council, with the Lib Dem Dhan Gurung making history as the first ex-Gurkha Councillor in the Country having been elected to represent Cheriton ward.

Liberal Democrat Town Council Group Leader Tim Prater welcomed the new Mayor saying: "Peter has given 20 years of service to Folkestone as a Cheriton Councillor, and has served on Folkestone Town Council since its start in 2004. His commitment to Folkestone and his ward is second to none, and he will make an excellent Mayor - as he has done in the past. As a Cheriton ward colleague, Peter has been invaluable since I was first elected, and is massively well known and respected across Cheriton and the Town of Folkestone as a hardworking and dedicated Councillor."
