Kent Police are warning local householders to be on their guard and to check callers were genuine after jewellery from a Shepway home was stolen.

Police said a man and a woman pretending to be police officers had visited at least four homes in Hawkinge, Sandgate and Hythe on Saturday. At one house jewellery was later discovered missing.

The callers claimed they needed to discuss where residents kept valuable items or if they were installing CCTV.

"Kent Police officers would not come into peoples homes for these reasons," said Inspector Darren Mullins.

The bogus callers were both white and in their 40s.

The man had cropped hair and was wearing a blue short-sleeved shirt. The woman was short, and wearing a long white jacket and dangly earrings.

"Police officers will have a number of different means of identification and I would advise anyone who is visited by an unexpected caller and has any doubts about them not to let them in and check they are genuine," said Inspector Mullins.
