'Inappropriate for any present councillor or prospective candidate to indicate how they would vote'

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

Re: Not enough information from candidates

As Lydd Airport is the subject of a present planning application which will be brought before the full Shepway Council for decision, it would be inappropriate for any present councillor or prospective candidate to indicate how they would vote before hearing all the facts put before the council.

To do so would be to 'fetter their discretion', and this may lead them to be unable to vote, and asked to leave the chamber when the matter is considered.

Normally planning applications are considered by the Development Control Committee (DCC) a 'quasi judicial' committee and all members are advised on this rule during training etc.

The fact that the full council has decided to consider the Lydd Airport planning application, means that the council will be acting as 'quasi judicial', and as such will have to follow the same rules as the DCC.

Given the foregoing and the fact I have served on DCC for the last 4-years, I hope your correspondent understands why no comment for or against the Lydd Airport planning application has ever been made by myself.

Not enough information from candidates

I would be more inclined to believe the candidates would not comment on the airport because of the “Loss of face from voters in the local election.

It would be a refreshing change for a politician to be ethical. I do think Michael has shot the Conservatives of Shepway in the foot with what I believe to be a classic case of “Sitting on the fence.

He has stated he is in favour of limited expansion but then said he wants a public enquiry. This is in no way a “Dig at Michael or the Conservative party, just this approach has lost the potential votes of the 2204 who are against the expansion according to the referendum that was held.

People tend to believe that parties’ candidates are “Tarred with the same brush; I put it to the forum to decide Ethics or Survival instinct.

I think the answer given by David Callahan is a case of sitting on the fence.

Why can other candidates say they against the expansion of Lydd Airport [some are already Cllrs] and he can not?. If he can't give me answer as to how he feels about these issues, how can I VOTE for him.

Come on give people the truth about where your policies lie.
