A man who climbed down a 400ft cliff at Capel-le-Ferne to retrieve his mobile phone had to be rescued by fire and coastguard teams after he became stuck on a ledge 360ft above the beach.

It was reported the man "ran out of strength" as he tried to climb the last 40ft after retrieving his phone and had to be helped back up the cliff face by a specialist line rescue team based in Deal.

The man was shaken but uninjured and suffered only embarrassment after his ordeal said a fire service spokesman.

The emergency services were called out at about 1.30pm on Saturday (14 April) when they had reports of a man hanging onto the cliff face near the Battle of Britain Memorial site.

A rescue helicopter was on standby in case the line rescue failed.
