Room for improvement in Channel emergency exercise

Dover Coastguard said a full scale exercise which took place in the Strait of Dover today (5 March) had gone well, but there was room for improvement in "lessons in communication".

The training exercise was held a day before the 20th anniversary of the Zeebrugge disaster, which killed 193.

It had been designed to test the joint Search and Rescue operations that would occur in a major maritime incident.

The exercise scenario involved the cross channel ferry Maersk Dover making a Mayday call to Dover Coastguard reporting that they had been in collision with an unidentified object.

As a result of this collision a spillage occurs from a lorry trailer carrying dangerous goods. A team from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Trust were deployed onto the ferry.
