Shhh! If you're looking for a quiet life, live in Folkestone

A report just published rates Folkestone as the fourth quietest town in England.

Professor of audiology at University College London, Deepak Prasher, drew up a map using traffic noise, which he says has become the number one noise pollutant.

Newcastle registered more than 80 decibels and according to the World Health Organisation any figure above 75 decibels is "unsuitable for human habitation".

Not surprisingly London and Birmingham registered noise levels high enough to cause severe stress, a weakened immune system, heart problems and tinnitus.

Further down the list are "black spots" such as Coventry, Brighton and Plymouth, where noise levels approaching 75 decibels which are sufficient to cause sleepless nights and lowered productivity at work.

The map shows that those chasing a quiet life are best heading to the South West, where Paignton and Torquay are relative oases of peace.

Folkestone together with Cambridge and Colchester also sit at the bottom of the noise league. However, even they top 55 decibels, above the level which experts say irritation can begin.

But it is bad news for the north of the county with Gillingham rated the sixth noisiest town in the country.

At the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious I would venture that the only reason Folkestone scored so low on the traffic noise scale is because of the complete lack of parking spaces following the demolition of the town's main car park to make way for the glorious shopping centre we've been promised for decades.

Has the learned Professor actually visited Folkestone do you think because, if he had, you'd think he might have noticed that the part that isn't a building site is a f***ing pedestrian precinct! D'oh!

Shh!, But not for long.

Unfortunately Folkestone will not maintain is quiet status if the Lydd Airport expansion goes ahead.

The Takeoff/Landing maps approved by the CAA show the Aircraft landing from 2800ft. The takeoff will be worse; the MOD has an exclusion zone around the Lydd and Hythe ranges so the flights will have to go inland.

This means the people in the Folkestone and Hythe will get the brunt of the Northern Europe flights. Lydd have permission to fly 24 hours a day so goodbye quite times and good house prices.
