Hawkinge is the latest East Kent village to be targeted by ram-raiders when thieves used a digger to smash the wall of a convenience store in the village and steal a cash machine.

Tesco Express in Hawkinge

Police said at least four raiders struck at the Tesco Express in Canterbury Road, in the early hours of Monday (12 February).

A spokesman said a flat bed truck and a 4x4 vehicle were also used in the raid.

Officers said the offenders loaded the cash machine on to a lorry and fled towards Folkestone.

The digger was abandoned outside the store.

The shop is currently cordoned off.

Recently stores in Whitfield near Dover and Sandwich have been robbed using mechanical diggers.
