Work is to begin improving bus stops in Hawkinge and on the 16 and 16A routes between Barham and Folkestone.

It is likely to take over three months for the work, which begins on Monday (10 December) to be completed.

Villagers may like to know more about the work which the Kent Highways are undertaking for bus operator Stagecoach.

What is planned?

We are planning to implement a series of bus stop improvements to the existing Stagecoach service operated along Route 16/16A between Barham and Folkestone.

The bus stop improvements will include a combination of bus boarders (raised kerbs with platforms), provision of hard standing areas and bus clearways. This will require the replacement of the existing kerbs with higher kerbs to allow easier access onto and off the buses for wheelchair users, people with small children and prams, as well as the elderly and infirm.

In addition, the areas of footway affected will be resurfaced and at some sites bus stop clearway markings will be painted on the carriageway. The clearways will mainly be provided or adjusted in more urban areas in order to keep the bus stop clear of any parking, enabling the buses to pull up correctly, in line with the boarder. These will be implemented separately by Shepway District Council or Canterbury City Council, where applicable. Existing bus stop flags will be also be replaced where appropriate.

Where will the works take place?

The sites are located along the Stagecoach Route 16/16A between Barham and Folkestone.

Why do you want to do this work?

The aim of the scheme is to provide easier access onto and off the buses and to allow the buses to correctly approach and stop at each location.

How will you carry out the work and how will it affect me?

Generally the works will be carried out by using temporary traffic signals, or localised signing and guarding. Temporary signals will normally only be used between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm in order to minimise disruption.

"Please respect our workers place and safety by driving carefully and slowly through the roadworks. Feedback from our workers shows that too many drivers go too fast through roadworks. Everyone is entitled to a safe workplace. Our men and women work next to moving traffic and risk injury every day".

When will the work start and how long will it take?

Work will start during week commencing Monday 10 December 2007, and take approximately 14 weeks to complete. Work at each stop is anticipated to take approximately 2-4 days and it is likely that work will take place in more than one location at a time.

The bus clearways will follow the completion of the boarders and will be implemented by Shepway District Council or Canterbury City Council as appropriate.

Will work be carried out on private property?

Kent Highway Services do not allow works to be carried out on private properties. If anyone says they are working for Kent Highway Services or our specialist contractors and offer to carry out any work for cash they should be treated with caution and you are advised to contact Kent County Council Trading Standards on 0845 3450210, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Who do I contact for more information?
