Hawkinge, Acrise and Paddlesworth WI - December meeting

"The weather outside is frightful” so the song goes and it certainly was on 4th but inside was all lightness and festivity as we met for our December meeting.

To reflect this mood our speakers were “The Bosworths” who entertained us with music and magic for Christmas. We certainly had lots of magic and then a good sing along of both traditional and popular Christmas music; “Sleigh bells ring are you listnin” to mention just one. If we hadn’t felt in the festive mood before we started most ladies left after a very happy afternoon treading a little lighter!

The president had started the meeting with a minutes silence to honour the passing of two ladies who had, in the past, been very supportive and long standing members; Ella Philpott and Anne Beaney. Pauline Hart gave a short eulogy for both of these sadly missed members.

Only one birthday this month; Ruth Prior had “Happy Birthday” sung to just her. However she was joined on the Birthday Table by the January babes; Gillian Philcox, Hettie Quinn and Margaret Prior as it is traditional not to have this table at our January Party. The president also asked Carol-Anne and Richard (The Bosworths) to take tea and cake with her and so the numbers swelled and it is hoped there was enough cake to go round! The members meanwhile were tucking into mince pies with their tea which was much needed after all that singing. The monthly competition for a “Shoulder Spray” was won by Christine Wethered.

Carole had mentioned to the ladies that some of us were fortunate to attend the Group Carols on the 3rd, held in Whitfield Village Hall – the church being too small to hold everyone – which was also a very joyous occasion.

Please note that our January meeting will be held on Tuesday 8th January as the 1st is a Bank Holiday. It will take the form of a January Party with a Beetle Drive and a performance of the Drama Group’s Christmas Play planned; put on especially for those ladies who missed it on first showing at the Christmas lunch. The monthly competition is for an item (either hand made or bought) starting with the letter J.

If you are not already a member why not begin the New Year doing something new and come along to the January meeting, it starts at 2pm in Hawkinge Village Hall and finishes around 4.15pm, you would be made very welcome. For any more information please phone Christine on 01303 863146.

A Very Happy New Year to you all from the President and all the members of our WI.

Linda Barnes

*Please note: We usually meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month but as the January meeting would fall on  the 1st  ( New Years Day) , it has been moved on a week and  will  now  be on 8th January 2008.
