Neighbourhood Watch report that Police in the South Kent area are very concerned that thieves who target lead and copper from homes and buildings are putting people's lives at risk.

Copper piping that ran from a gas main was ripped out from the side of a house in Warren Road, Folkestone last week and the residents awoke to a strong smell of gas.

Lead flashing from their conservatory had also been removed.

This is the latest incident which police believe is linked to the escalating value of metals such as lead and copper.

Property owners and residents are being advised to examine their security and Police are making frequent visits to scrap yards across the county to ascertain who is selling and receiving stolen metal.

Scrap metal dealers have been encouraged to report any suspicious selling activity.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Kent Police on 01303 850055 or alternatively contact Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
