Newington and District Garden Club Chrysanthemum Show

By John S Lawrie

On Sunday (4 November) I had the privilege to be able to show at Newington it was their first Proper daytime Chrysanthemum Show. They also had classes for all members Veg /Floral Art and Domestic as well. Over 20 exhibitors of which more than half showed Chrysant. We had from Novice up to experienced Showmen.

The atmosphere was electric and the laughter and banter took me back 20 years to my Midland roots. Experienced showmen helping others show and the blind leading the blind. Tea and coffee for them all they could not do enough for you. This is what it is all about.

Then we had our Judges, what a pair. Allen Wright and Howard Thatcher straight from the Late National. A joy to watch in action. They did the job properly lifting every vase and their comments were very good. A great discussion was had over the meal that was provided for them, and after their help in talking to some of the exhibitors was well appreciated.

The way the Club members accepted the decisions was great and the comments we were able to pass on from the Judges I am sure will help in future. The laughter seemed to go on all day.

Here in the South East corner of Kent we had a small hot bed of Chrysanthemum enthusiasts who need to be nurtured by the powers that be. We must have other areas in the UK just like them at grass root level.

It has been my privilege to help Newington over the last few years and so fitting to be able to Show for the last time in Kent at such a wonderful Show. Some of the Blooms would have been placed at the Group Show and held their own at National level.

Most of the trophies were won by Ian Johnson ably supported by Tom Dean, Ray Perrin, John Brand, Malcolm Brisley and yours truly.

Thanks to all the Members and Officers, Exhibitors and the public for such a great day and may you go from strength to strength. The real winner today was the CHRYSANTHEMUM.
