Four small Kent communities are piloting a project to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

The Low Carbon Communities project involves Elham near Folkestone, St Margaret's-at-Cliffe near Dover, Hadlow near Tonbridge and Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey. They have been chosen to represent different areas of Kent, are each led by different organisations - school, community, college, business - and are all keen to get involved in the next few months.

The first of these is being launched by Elham Environment Group in the village school on Tuesday 20 November at 7.30pm.

Kent County Council (KCC) have said it recognises that more and more Kent communities want to become low carbon and is keen to help them. Providing leadership and support for action across Kent as a whole, particularly by encouraging residents and communities to take action towards low carbon lifestyles, is an important part of KCC action on climate change.

KCC Cabinet Member for Environment, Transportation and Waste Keith Ferrin, who initiated the project, said: "This is a good example of KCC taking practical and innovative steps to encourage local action on climate change. It will make a real difference to these communities."
